An Article on Matchups in T20 Cricket
Peeking into numbers sliced by matchups for ESPNcricinfo.
Matchups are the rage in T20 cricket nowadays. To my surprise, I found not much written about them. So I decided to look at the numbers sliced by matchups, and I defined a pair of indices that try to quantify a player’s performance relative to the baseline expectation from a given matchup.
This is a relatively superficial look, a sort of preliminary look at how matchup numbers work.
Have a read here, and please leave any comments you have.
I had also promised spreadsheets with all the various numbers, sliced by batting hand / bowling type / innings phase: here is the Google Drive folder.
This is an insightful analysis, good work Himanshu. The phase wise break down helps. Wonder if you noticed variability against the same type of bowler across phases for different batters and what could explain it.
Thanks.
